Looking for Mums with a strong opinion - I wonder if we have any of those ;)

We have been approached by a TV Production Company who are currently making a documentary about motherhood.

Here is an extract from their message:

"The documentary is a celebratory look at women who love being mums and who are very focused on bringing up their children the best way possible. For the project we are looking to find outspoken mums who have strong views about motherhood and who have a unique parenting strategy or who have found a unique way to make modern motherhood work for them.

Amongst others we are also looking for mums giving birth in April / May who might be interested in this project (their birth won’t necessarily need to be filmed).. I was therefore hoping you might be able to pass on my email to your midwives, as they may know of some suitable mums?"

Please make contact direct with Silke if you are interested x

Four really interesting articles surrounding the issues of due dates:

1) The Lie of the Estimated Due Date (EDD): Why Your Due Date Is Not What You Think by Misha Safranski

Extract: "the 40 week EDD is that it is not based in fact. It is one of many pregnancy and childbirth myths which has wormed its way into the standard of practice over the years"

2) Counting Down to the Birth by Michael Blastland Producer, BBC Radio 4's More or Less

Extract: "In Britain women are given a due date of 280 daysCould a surfeit of overdue babies be all in the counting?"

3) Why Pregnancy Due Dates Are Inaccurate by Danelle Frisbie

Extract: "Our epidemic rate of induction, use of pitocin, and sky-rocketing cesarean sections are directly related to our lack of trust in birth and babies and women's bodies."

4) Issues in Pregnancy Dating: Revisiting the Evidence: Menstrual Dating - Medscape – Midwivery and Women’s Health (2009) Elsevier Science

Extract: "Frederich Naegele, a 19th-century obstetrician, is credited with developing a simple calculation to determine the EDD by adding 7 days to the first day of the LMP and then subtracting 3 months....Naegele's rule was in fact not Naegele's original idea but based on the writings of Hermann Boerhaave, an 18th-century professor of botany and medicine in the Netherlands. Naegele credited Boerhaave with developing the formula to calculate the delivery date from the last menses, which some historians believe Boerhaave loosely based on observations found in the Bible that human gestation lasted 10 lunar months (280 days)."

Crunch time for Independent Midwives

Ruth says: "It is crunch time and we really need your help if independent midwives are going to be able to practise in the UK in future. If you recognise the value of personalised, high quality midwifery care throughout pregnancy, birth and after the baby is born that an independent midwife is able to provide, then please could you let the government know NOW"

Beverley Lawrence Beech's response to "Risky Homebirth" article

Recently there was outcry from women's groups following an article in a daily newspaper entitled "Give me a Hospital Birth Any Day". Beverley Lawrence Beech, Chair of Association for the Improvement of Maternity Services has written a superb response which you can read in full HERE. It's essential reading for midwives, doulas, parents-to-be and especially anyone who has faced the "ooo! that was very brave" response to telling someone they chose to have their baby at home
